your cat will not tell you they're in pain. they're built to hide it, so by the time you can see it, it's usually been there a while. this is the list my vet gave me. save it and check your cat tonight ✅
🚨 what to watch for
1️⃣ stopped jumping up: the counter, the windowsill, the bed. if the high spots go quiet, pushing off has started to hurt
2️⃣ a matted patch on the back: they groom everywhere they can reach. a patch they've given up on means twisting to reach it hurts
3️⃣ one spot licked bald: cats lick where it hurts. a bald patch is a map
4️⃣ hunched, feet tucked, tail tight: it looks like resting, but the whole body is braced
5️⃣ missing the litter box: climbing in hurts, so they go next to it. it's not bad behavior
6️⃣ hiding, no door greeting: a cat who always met you at the door and suddenly doesn't is telling you something
⚠️ one of these on its own can be nothing. two or three together, call your vet. cats hide pain on instinct, so if you can see it, don't wait for it to get worse

❌ plants to keep away from your cat
1️⃣ lily: every part is toxic, including the pollen and the water in the vase. it can cause kidney failure within hours. don't keep them in the house at all. if your cat chewed any part, call a vet the same day
2️⃣ sago palm: every part, and the seeds most of all. it causes liver damage. rehome the plant. any chewing is a vet call
3️⃣ azalea: leaves and flowers, indoors and in the garden. vomiting, drooling and heart rhythm effects. keep it out of reach
4️⃣ daffodil: the bulb is the worst part, then the flower. severe stomach upset. don't leave bulbs where a cat can dig
5️⃣ tulip: the bulbs again, and the cut stems in a vase. drooling, vomiting, stomach pain. vase up high, or out of the house
⚠️ important: if you're not sure what a plant is, take a photo and ask your vet. if your cat chewed something on this list, call straight away. don't wait for symptoms and don't try to make them sick yourself

6 things to teach your kitten now, before they turn into habits you have to undo at six months. each one takes a few minutes a day. save this and start with one 🐾
1️⃣ teach "come" (5 mins a day): shake the treat jar and say their name once, in the same bright voice every time. treat the second they turn towards you, don't wait for them to arrive. 5 times a day for a week
2️⃣ carrier = good (before you need it): leave it out with the door off and a blanket inside. feed every meal beside it, then just inside it, moving the bowl 5cm further in each day. then shut the door for 10 seconds, treat, open. vet day stops being a fight
3️⃣ stop counter-jumping: clear the counter completely for two weeks. put a tall perch right beside it and treat up there. every time they jump up, lift them onto the perch and treat there
4️⃣ brushing without a fight: for 3 days just rest the brush on their back and treat. then one stroke along the shoulder, treat, and stop while they still want more. add one stroke a day
5️⃣ teach "off": say it once and toss a treat onto the floor. never lift them down. praise and treat the moment four paws land. 3 times a day for a week
6️⃣ stop door-dashing: toss a treat to the back of the hall every time you open the front door, before you touch the handle, not after they bolt
⚠️ tip: short and boring beats long and exciting. end every session while they still want more

your cat might have been saying i love you for months and you missed it. the slow blink is one of the only ways a cat can tell you they feel safe with you. here's what it means and how to say it back 🐾
1️⃣ the slow blink: it's the closest thing a cat has to saying i love you. closing their eyes near you means they don't see you as a threat
2️⃣ blink back: close your eyes slowly for about two seconds, then look away. that's the whole reply
3️⃣ don't stare: a hard, unblinking stare is what a predator does. soften your eyes and look slightly off to the side
4️⃣ it works on shy cats: blink at a nervous one from across the room, give it time, and watch them settle
5️⃣ check the body too: a soft blink plus loose shoulders means they're properly relaxed
💛 try it tonight: sit a little way off, don't reach for them, and blink slowly. if they blink back, you just had a conversation

the note i keep on my phone in case he eats something. you won't think clearly in the moment, so write it down now while you're calm. save this and fill in the last line tonight 📝
🚨 if your dog eats something he shouldn't
1️⃣ call the vet first. don't wait for symptoms. with chocolate, grapes, xylitol and antifreeze, treatment works early and stops working later. the call costs nothing
2️⃣ have 3 things ready: what he ate, roughly how much, and when. that's the whole triage
3️⃣ keep the packet: photograph the label. sugar-free gum is the one people miss, and xylitol is the ingredient that matters
4️⃣ don't make him sick: not unless a vet tells you to, on the phone, for that specific thing
5️⃣ out of hours number: put it in your notes now. at 2am you won't remember which clinic covers nights
⚠️ "he seems fine" is not the test. some of the dangerous ones look fine for hours

5 things in your garden that poison dogs, and most of them sit at exactly nose height. slug pellets are the one. dogs eat them straight off the soil. save this and walk your garden this weekend 🌿
❌ check your garden for
1️⃣ slug pellets: scattered right where a dog sniffs. they cause tremors and seizures, fast. use a pet-safe brand or none at all. if you think he's eaten some, it's an emergency
2️⃣ sago palm: the whole plant is toxic, the seeds worst of all. it causes liver failure. take it out. there's no safe amount
3️⃣ compost and grass cuttings: moldy heaps grow toxins that cause shaking, then seizures. use a closed bin, or fence the heap off properly
4️⃣ standing water and blue-green algae: still water in warm weather with a paint-like scum on top. some blooms are rapidly fatal and minutes matter. don't let him swim in or drink scummy water
5️⃣ azalea and rhododendron: leaves and flowers, and they drop onto the lawn. drooling, vomiting, heart rhythm effects. sweep up fallen leaves where he grazes

how to set up a crate so your dog actually likes it. a crate is a bedroom, never a punishment, and if it's ever used as one it stops working. here's the full setup, save it before crate night 🐶
✅ the setup
1️⃣ door open, always, at first: leave it open for the first week so they walk in and out freely. a dog that chose to go in will settle. one that was shut in learns the opposite
2️⃣ bedding that smells of home: a blanket that already smells of you and the house. scent is most of what makes a strange box feel safe. remove anything they shred and swallow
3️⃣ a chew that only lives in there: one stuffed chew, given only inside the crate. hand it over before you leave, not after. it makes going in the best part of the day
4️⃣ water they can't tip: a clip-on bowl, filled whenever they're in for a while. a crated dog can't go and find a drink
5️⃣ a cover over three sides: drape a blanket over the top and three sides. a den has one entrance. leave real airflow and never cover it in the heat
⚠️ how long is too long? grown dogs, four hours in the day as a ceiling. puppies, far less

why your dog won't stop licking their paws. it's rarely just a habit. there's usually a reason, and most of them you can check at home. here are 5 worth checking 🐾
1️⃣ after every walk: pollen and grass seeds get stuck between the pads. wipe his paws on the way in
2️⃣ the corn chip smell: if his paws smell like corn chips, that's yeast, and yeast means moisture
3️⃣ food can do it: protein sensitivities often show up in the paws before anywhere else
4️⃣ boredom licking is real: licking releases endorphins, so a bored dog home alone will keep going
5️⃣ dry between the toes: damp fur after rain is exactly what bacteria want. towel between the toes, not just the tops
⚠️ if it keeps coming back there's a trigger, and a vet will find it faster than you will. red skin, a smell or limping means go sooner
